This thesis introduces readers to Neuro Linguistic Programming, a system of alternative therapy which aims to improve effective communication and educate in self-development (Tosey and Mathison 2006). The NLP techniques and approaches that are studied and are adapted in this thesis include, but are not limited to: Representational Systems- the deliberate use of language which engages visual, auditory or kinesthetic methods; the Milton Model – a deliberate use of |artfully vague| language and ambiguous grammatical constructs; the Meta Model – a focused and pragmatic linguistic approach; Anchoring – eliciting desired behavior through means akin to a Pavlovian response; and Cognitive Reframing – changing the ways in which a subject perceives a situation. These techniques were chosen for having linguistic potential to be used in an innovative and systemic way. This study adopts NLP in a classroom setting and attempts to use these methods to increase students academic performance and information retention in class. It does so by devising an experiment completed across three different English classes. Class number one was English level II, class number two was English level III and class number three was English level IV. The testing was done across different levels of English across the duration of different semester intervals in order to establish diversity in the sample composition. Each class contained an average of (15 students or less) and the age level varied between 17-56.
